PUMP GUIDE

Why the pool pump matters, and when to replace it

The pump is the heart of a pool: it draws water through the skimmers and main drain, pushes it through the filter and returns it to the pool. When it weakens, neither the filter nor the sanitiser can do its job properly.

What happens when a pump weakens?

With too little circulation, chlorine doesn't spread evenly and dirt isn't captured. If the full volume doesn't pass through the filter within 24 hours, the risk of algae and pathogens rises. The usual result is cloudy water, more chemicals and more cleaning.

Signs it may be time

If you notice any of these, have a technician check the pump. Not all of them mean a new pump; some are small repairs.

  • A high-pitched screech: usually the bearings, and the motor can seize if left
  • Humming but not turning: possibly the capacitor or a jam
  • Water dripping near the motor: a worn shaft seal, which can let water reach the bearings
  • Won't prime or draws air: check the water level, lid seal and blockages first
  • A cracked housing, tripping breakers or overheating

Repair or replace?

Pumps are usually given a life of 8–12 years, depending on running hours, water chemistry and the plant room. Repair makes sense for parts such as seals or capacitors. If the motor has burned out, the housing is cracked or an older pump keeps failing, replacing it is usually more economical.

Choosing the right pump

Bigger isn't better. Power should match the pool volume, filter capacity and pipe size, or you waste electricity and strain the filter. Variable-speed pumps run at lower speeds and can cut energy use by 50–90%, depending on use.

Making a new pump last

A few simple habits protect the pump for years.

  • Never run it dry, and clean the strainer basket regularly
  • Keep it raised off the floor and stop water collecting in the plant room
  • Let the motor breathe, and keep cables and connections dry
  • Make sure the circuit has residual-current protection
